Leapfrogging
A quicker way to complete complex parts.
Students are sometimes shocked or bewildered by how I go about preparing surfaces for finishing on a chair. Basically, I get parts to shape with saws, shaves and rasps. Then I quickly homogenize the surfaces with #80-grit sandpaper backed by cork or a wooden block.
Scrape. Done.
It’s fast. No working through sanding grits. Just #80. Then scrape.
Note that this is for complex shapes only. Flat boards or facets on a leg are simply handplaned, then finished.

Thanks Chris. I have read and heard from many professional woodworkers to not plane after using sandpaper as that will quickly dull your plane’s blade. It would seem that the same advice would apply to card scrapers. This advice was generally referring to last grit 220 and to not plane after its use. How does this advice apply to the much coarser 80 grit?
Cheers,
Michael
Do you find this applies generally for all finishes or just Soft Wax or the like?
